Bay Island Valuations was established in 1996 by Paul Mergler. The fundamental purpose behind its' establishment was to provide the people of the Moreton Bay Islands with a resident Island Valuer, something that was previously lacking.

28 years later, and this genuine service is still going strong.

Paul began his career in 1986 as a Cadet Land Inspector with the Department of Lands, Queensland. Between 1986 and April 1993 he was stationed for various times in the Brisbane, Mackay, Roma, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Gold Coast District Officers.

Primary duties included the management of the Crown Estate, incorporating the use, leasing and disposal of crown land and resumption assessments for land required for public purposes.

In 1989-90 the Lands Department and the Valuer Generals Department amalgamated their valuations rolls. Paul was heavily involved in the interdepartmental restructure as well as undertaking new duties including annual and maintenance valuations for local authority rating and land tax purposes. Paul gained registration as an Urban and Rural Valuer on the 27th of August 1991 and was admitted as an Associate of the Australian Property Institute on 1st June 1992.

Paul resigned from the newly named Department of Natural Resources in April 1993 and travelled in Australia and overseas.

Between January 1994 and April 1994 Paul was employed by Greg Jorgensen and Associates doing mortgage valuations for lending institutions.

From April 1994 to October 1996 Paul was employed by the Australian Valuation Office, (AVO) Queensland Division. Primary work involved the inspection and valuation of various properties throughout Queensland for the Social Security and Veteran Affairs asset test. Property types regularly encountered included vacant, residential, englobo, special use, industrial, retail, commercial, rural residential and rural properties. Paul was also involved in a number of rental determination valuations for commercial, retail and industrial properties.
The AVO was contracted to complete a number of large asset valuation projects for government and semi government organisations. Paul was directly involved with valuations for -: Q build (Qld Government Housing), Defence Department, Telstra, Westpac, Qld Forest Service, Primary Industries, Qld Health, and Qld Rail.

Paul's broad valuation experience has allowed him to build a large network of personnel throughout Queensland. He has a good understanding of all levels of government and the ability to draw on an extensive information base.
Paul believes his strength lies in his passion for the Bay Islands, his ability to relate to the people who choose to live there and his determination to meet clients specific requirements through a sound, reconcilable, market approach to property reporting.

Paul is happily married to Anna and they have four kids, Poppy, Flynn, Harry and Monty.
